Learn design fundamentals and concept development as they relate to typography, composition, and color. Discover what makes the difference between ordinary images and powerful, effective graphics. Strengthen your design communication skills and develop your style and vision as you transform your concepts into finished design. The class explores the concept of visual communication in terms of the triad of message, form, and audience. Projects focus on the design process of ideation, research, prototype, solution, and reflection.
This course covers the history of graphic design from the mid-19th century through the digital revolution. Influential movements are examined, including arts and crafts, art nouveau, Dada, Constructivism, De Stijl, Bauhaus, Neue Grafik, DIY Punk, and todays digital landscape. Students explore the evolution of the discipline from typesetting to lithography to digital design and investigate the relationship of the graphic design discipline to propaganda, advertising, branding, personal expression, and social change.
Study the foundation of graphic design as a communication tool and learn the importance of graphic design as an informative and promotional presence in commerce and society. What is the designer's role as a communicator and innovator of design? Develop the creative, technical, and business skills needed to reach a specific target audience. Learn the steps to create a project from concept through execution. Improve the visual quality of the final artwork through the use of high-resolution imagery and dynamic composition.
Students will develop illustration and design skills. Students will gain an appreciation for graphic designers and experience the full artistic process behind creating logos, websites, templates, graphics, and more. Students will also develop skills in presenting and analyzing designs.
Students will design their own digital landscape painting. Students will be able to brainstorm and organize their ideas. Students will develop an understanding in digital landscape painting. Students will develop an appreciation for science fiction and fantasy paintings. Students will discuss and analyze each others digital drawings using art vocabulary.
Java provides an ideal environment in which to grasp the universal concepts of Object Oriented Programming. Use the Java API to create Graphic User Interfaces, handle mouse events & other user input, work with data structures, manage the file system, connect to a database using JDBC, and create dynamic web pages using HTML and JSP. Prerequisite: Java For New Programmers or prior programming experience. Note: Classroom location listings are also posted outside the CAPS office and the lobby of the 17 Lexington Avenue building.
