DataKind is looking for a Business Development Manager based out of our New York office.

We bring pro bono data scientists together with organizations that are dedicated to solving the world’s most pressing challenges. Every day, mission driven organizations apply to us with their data science needs. We then work to understand their pain points, how their organization works and, most importantly, how their data and other data sources can be used to make the biggest impact on the world.

We’ve helped the World Bank estimate poverty from satellite imagery, teamed with the Grameen Foundation to improve their mobile knowledge programs in Uganda, and joined the American Red Cross in using fire data and open city data to understand where fires are most likely to occur. About the Role
The Business Development Manager is responsible for ensuring that we meet our revenue goals and programmatic goals by stewarding relationships and closing deals with mission-driven project partners and funding partners.

The Business Development Manager will report to the Senior Business Development Manager and will work closely with the Managing Director, Business Development and Grants Manager, and our Programs staff.

What You’ll Do
Manage a portfolio of relationships with DataKind funders (foundations, corporations) and programmatic partners (nonprofits, government agencies, etc) to generate substantial revenue and high impact projects

Build and manage relationships with diverse stakeholders, including foundation funders, corporate funders, mission-driven organizations
Steward partners for consistent engagement and value
Retain existing partners and funders and seek to increase mutual value over time
Update and manage CRM for your portfolio of relationships
Meet with prospective partners on DataKind’s behalf and pull in appropriate staff when necessary
Keep your finger on the pulse of our existing donors, managing their experience with DataKind and ensuring each partner receives tailored and customized touch points throughout the year
Generate substantial revenue

Generate and pursue leads with prospective funding and programmatic partners that map to DataKind strategy
Work with your manager (Senior Manager, Business Development) to develop strategy around stewarding relationships and closing deals
Help DataKind meet our organizational goals by developing partnerships that generate funding and project partners
Meet quarterly revenue goals
Create fundraising materials, including written proposals, presentations, brochures, etc
Oversee quality of projects generated by the deals you close and manage relationships with stakeholders

Track ongoing progress against deliverables to ensure quality outputs
Work with DataKind’s Grants Manager to produce grant reports and written updates to project funders at key project milestones
Manage relationship with funders and programmatic partners to ensure that they have a fantastic experience
Manage special projects generated from the deals you close

Develop workplans, complete work, and oversee peers on special projects related to your partnerships
At the end of an event/ initiative/ project, solicit reflections and feedback from other staff and incorporate learnings into future work

Requirements
3-5 years relevant experience in a partnership and revenue-generating position such as nonprofit fundraising, corporate sales, business development consulting or a related role
Demonstrated track record of developing reciprocal partnerships that meet organization goals (revenue or other) and provide real value to the external partner
Verbal and cognitive abilities to follow complicated and circuitous conversation and generate a concrete opportunity for partnership
Exceptional interpersonal and communications skills (verbal/written) with the ability to interact effectively internally as well as with external contacts
Exceptional attention to detail and organizational skills
Ability to work well both independently and as a collaborator
Demonstrate integrity, dependability, responsibility, accountability, self-awareness, work ethic, and empathy
