Amazon readies one-hour food delivery in NYC

Amazon.com Inc. is preparing to roll out food delivery across New York City. The Seattle-based e-commerce giant confirmed that it will deliver natural and organic products from Whole Foods Market in parts of Long Island and through select areas in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Products are expected to be delivered within an hour. The offering is made possible thanks to Amazon's (Nasdaq: AMZN) acquisition of Whole Foods Market, the $13.7 billion deal that wrapped up last summer.

New Yorkers who are Prime members will now be able to shop for groceries — produce, meat, seafood, everyday staples and other locally sourced items — from Whole Foods via the "Prime Now" website.

Select alcohol is also available for delivery, which doesn't do local booze delivery startups like Minibar any favors.

The service will expand to additional neighborhoods in New York City and across the U.S. throughout 2018
