Female-led startups in N.Y.C. and L.A. have an edge over Bay Area counterparts

A higher percentage of female-led tech startups in New York City and Los Angeles receive venture capital than their Silicon Valley counterparts. That's according to a new study from PitchBook, the Seattle-based firm known for tracking all-things VC and private equity.

Nonprofit group All Raise, Microsoft Corp. and Goldman Sachs Group Inc. also collaborated on the report, which took an in-depth look at the current state of women in the startup economy. New York and LA may have an edge percentage-wise, but the Bay Area has a higher tally of deals. Here's a breakdown of what PitchBook uncovered:

Bay Area

  • 435 deals for $6.3 billion in 2018
  • 303 deals for $4.6 billion so far this year
  • In 2018, startups with at least one female founder secured 10 percent of total VC investments

NY

  • 307 deals for $2.4 billion last year
  • 199 deals for $1.8 billion so far this year
  • In 2018, female-led startups received 17 percent of total VC investments

LA

  • 181 deals for $1 billion last year
  • 117 for $800 million this year
  • In 2018, female-led startups secured 28 percent of total VC investments
